Mum jailed for selling daughter,12

A mother who sold her 12-year-old daughter for an illegal gypsy wedding has been jailed for six years.

Anca Srancu bound her daughter, Adina, in dog chains and sold her to another Roma family as a bride for their son, also 12, heard a court in Constanta, Romania.

The girl was beaten brutally to terrify her into cooperating with the arranged marriage, judges were told.

Sylvi Adana, the mother of the boy she was supposed to marry, was also jailed for five years for her part in the plot.

Adina only escaped, the court heard, when her would-be husband unchained her from her bed because he felt sorry for her.

"The girl was found tied with chains and with bruises around her eyes," said Roxana Onea, a spokesman for Romania's child protection agency.

"The boy is the one who called the police. He didn't want to marry the girl."

Both mothers have also each been ordered to pay the equivalent of 10,000 (RM49, 409) in compensation to their victim.
