Fifth-grader pens anti-maths poem
A fifth-grader has penned a poem to her mother requesting a break from the burden of homework assignments.
The poem, titled "Mom, I'm under such pressure", created a lot of interest on the Internet, and sparked a debate on child education in China.
Yueyue, a 12-year-old girl in Nanjing, wrote the poem after a quarrel with her mother who insisted that she finished a mathematics worksheet.
The mother urged her daughter to practise more, but the girl protested with a rhymed poem written in three minutes.
The poem goes: "Mom, I'm under great pressure... whether it iscold winter or hot summer, I'm always at home. Not playing Barbie dolls or online games, but working on the Olympic math questions.
"... when can I take a break, I want to explore each blade of grass and every flower... I wish to play with my friends.
"Mom, I promise I will not fail you when I grow up. Please don't cut me from nature. Please give me a break."
The author said the fight with her mother was "a fight for the right".
She said she likes practising Chinese, but her mother forced her to concentrate on maths.
"I thus knew my child was not happy, because she was restrained from what she likes and forced into what she hates," said the mother.
