Alone in a remote forest, a logger whose foot was trapped under a 12,000lb (5,443kg) trailer made an agonising decision to hack off his toes.

Jon Hutt, who had no phone reception and knew no one would hear his cries, took half an hour to decide to sever all the toes on his right foot with a three-inch pocketknife.

He said: I cut off my boot to see my foot, and once I realised how bad it was, I started cutting off my toes. It hurt so bad. I would cut for a while and then I had to rest.

The courageous 61-year-old then calmly collected his toes, wrapped his shirt around his bleeding foot and drove his truck to a place with a mobile signal.

Jon then called for help and was met by an ambulance but unfortunately his toes were too mangled to be re-attached at hospital.

He said: They told me there was no hope for them. They said there was nothing to attach the toes to. Instead, doctors sewed up his foot and wrapped it in bandages. Two weeks after the accident, Jon, from Colorado, is recovering well on his crutches.

He said: Its important to keep your head and not panic and just start screaming and shouting.

Retired Jon had gone into the forest alone to cut some firewood. While he was working, his trailer slipped, trapping his foot against the ground.

Wife Margaret said she was shaking when he left a message saying: Please call, I cut my foot off. She said she was slightly relieved to found out it was just his toes. - www.mirror.co.uk
