Grandmum and girl hurt in fairgound accident

Doctors were battling Monday night to save the leg of a grandmother badly hurt when she was flung from a fairground ride with her granddaughter.

The woman, 58, and the girl of four were on a log flume when it flipped at the bottom of a steep 30ft water slide.

Holidaymakers watched in horror as the gran was catapulted on to a walkway, receiving a horrific wound to one leg.

Despite blood pouring from the injury, the brave woman tried to get up to reach her granddaughter.

But helpers forced her to lie down reassuring her that the youngster had been thrown into the pool at the bottom of the ride.

The girl received cuts and bruises in the accident at Bridlington, East Yorks, on Sunday.

The gran was airlifted to Hull Royal Infirmary where she had emergency surgery. Her condition was said to be stable last night.

One worker at a nearby fairground stall said: "It was horrible. There was blood everywhere. The woman's leg was badly damaged."

And a woman whose family had been waiting to ride the flume said: "It was a terrible thing to have happened. The log hit the water gathered at the bottom of the slide and tipped over."

There were claims there was not enough water at the base, meaning the log hit the bottom and flipped.

The ride is also believed to have been stopped shortly before the accident. The Health and Safety Executive is investigating.

Bridlington Mayor Cyril Marsburg said: "I'm quite surprised that there aren't seatbelts on the ride."

It is the second funfair accident in a week. Last Tuesday a boy of 12 was seriously injured after coming off the Excalibur 2 ride at the Camelot Theme Park in Chorley, Lancashire.
