The man lying unconscious on the roadside after he was attacked by yobs.A riot victim was fighting for life Tuesday night after yobs attacked him for trying to stop a blaze they started that threatened homes.The unnamed man, in his forties or early fifties, was scared the fire outside a shop could spread to flats above.But he was felled by the mob and is believed to have hit his head on the pavement. He was critically ill in hospital.Sickening footage was posted on the web of the hero lying in the street with fires blazing feet away near Ealing Broadway in West London on Monday night.Witness Jim Martin, 40, said: "The rioters had set a bin alight and then they jumped on him when he tried to put it out."The fire was outside a shop where there are flats above. He might have thought the homes could go up in flames."The police looked really worried and were trying to save him. It didn't look good."
Another local said: "It's sad that someone may lose their life trying to stand up to these yobs."A detective told me the man was in a bad way."Commander Simon Foy, of Scotland Yard, said: "It was quite a grave assault and his condition is causing us some concern."The road where the attack took place remained closed yesterday as forensic teams examined the scene. CCTV which could hold vital clues to the attack was taken away by cops.The same group of rioters were also believed to have mugged customers as they sat in a nearby restaurant. Local shopkeeper Jim added: "Customers were sitting at the tables and they were just grabbing stuff from them."They were 17 to 20-years-old." The riots claimed their first victim yesterday when a man shot in the head in Croydon, South London, on Monday died in hospital. Sources say the 26-year-old was gunned down after a high-speed car chase as two gangs clashed while looting.At least 111 police officers have been injured in t! he viole nce.Many are still undergoing hospital treatment. Injuries include broken bones, head wounds, concussion, cuts, sprains and eye injuries.Five police dogs have also been hurt.
