Good enough to eat?

By Rizal JohanMalaysian director James Lee (Histeria, Sini Ada Hantu) has hit a bump with one of his latest films, Claypot Curry Killers,
after being turned down twice by the censorship board (Lembaga Penapisan Filem Malaysia) because of the cannabilism element involved."It's actually more of a family drama. The cannibalism is just an aspect of the film," said Lee, who also wrote the film's script. The film's producers however, are not giving up on the film as reshoots are scheduled to take place."The original cut of the film was turned down by the censorship board so we trimmed down the violent and gory scenes and sent it again
but that was turned down as well."We're still hoping to release the film by end of the year and we'll be doing reshoots for the new version of the film," said Lee.Claypot Curry Killers is a Chinese-language film which revolves around a family-owned restaurant where the meat is sourced by questionable means. It stars Debbie Goh, Mandy Chen, Olivia Kang, Pearlly Chua, Steve Yap, and Jeff Chin and is produced by Tayangan Unggul and Hadir Dinamik. In an unrelated bit of news, Lee is currently in the midst of shooting a period action film The Collector and another film - Tolong! Awek Aku Pontianak -
a Malay-language horror-comedy is expected to hit cinemas in July 2011.If Claypot Curry Killers gets the censorship board approval, that would make three film releases this year alone for Lee (Sini Ada Hantu was released on Feb 10 2011).So why is Lee, who made a name for himself as an arthouse director with the likes of The Beautiful Washing Machine, working so hard?"That's a good question," he laughed."Well, I've got a family to support but the other thing is I need money for my independent film which I plan to shoot this June," he said.It looks like Lee make! s movies in order to make more movies.Published March 14 2011
