A convicted killer in the United Kingdom is about to have a sex change in prison, reported The Sun.

Matthew Richardson is taking hormones to prepare for the operation - as Maxine Rykes.

Last week Richardson, 55, was on temporary release, helping out at a charity shop wearing ear studs, a pink body warmer and a white top.This controversial sex change will cost the taxpayer 45,000 (RM219,596).

Asked if the public should be expected to pay for his op, the lifer - a former kissogram - replied in a deep voice: "Absolutely no comment."

A source said: "This is a men's prison, so it's not easy. And from next week sex-swap inmates can wear dresses, padded bras and make-up - and we have to call them Miss or Ms."

A sposkesperson for the Department of Health said, "Transsexual prisoners have the right to receive the same range and quality of National Health Service treatments as anyone else, including treatment for gender reassignment."

Richardson is in prison for stabbing vice gran Margaret Bolingbroke, 65, after she mocked his performance.
