United Kingdom pensioner Donna Smith used to be a man called Donald for most of her life.

Donna grew up in the 50s when being a woman trapped in a mans body was unacceptable.

Because of society's indifference to such people, Donna had to live as a man by day and a woman by night.

As attitudes towards people such as her began to soften, she finally had a sex change five years ago,when she was 69.

This makes her the oldest person in the UK to have one.

Now 74, she gave her first ever interview to the Sunday Mirror, saying she found she could have a sex change when she was 40.

However, she was put on a long waiting list on the National Health Service, to have the operation.

Finally at the age of 69, her turn came.

I couldn't believe it - but for me it was better late than never, she says.
