Although small, sardines have their own way to scare off potential predators.
A huge group of sardines probably tens of thousands of them was recently seen mimicking a hugh dolphin in the sea off Philippines.
Steve De Neef, 29, spotted the shoal and took a photograph of this remarkable moment while diving in Cebu.
The underwater photographer said the shoal started forming at the surface and then went down some 30 metres.
"Getting the picture of the dolphin-shape was just about being in the right spot at the right time.
"As soon as I took it I noticed how organised the school looked. It is amazing to see the shoal move together but I'd never seen such an unusual shape."
Fish are known to stick together like this for protection, but it was just coincidence that they formed a shape resembling a dolphin, he said.
