Nurse tapes pacifier on newborn's mouth

A nurse in China pasted a pacifier on the mouth of a newborn, using cellophane tape, to stop her from crying.

The baby's mother discovered this after spotting red marks on her daughter's cheeks and mouth area.

She said the 50--day-old baby Ruirui was admitted to the Central Hospital of Xinxiang City in Henan province for a lung infection earlier this month.

A week later, she was shocked to see the marks on the girl's faceand questioned the medical staff.

Later, nurse Shang Jianjian told her the marks were caused by cellophane tape, which was used to stick a pacifier on the baby's mouth.

She even demonstrated to reporters how she did it to Ruirui.

The hospital's vice-principal Fan Junsheng said the method was a new technique to stop newborns from crying, claiming it is used at major hospitals in Beijing and Shanghai.

However, a pediatrician from Shanghai denied the claim, saying they had never used such a method on any babies.
