Mayor punching cop caught on tape

A Filipino mayor was caught on tape attacking a policeman.

Davao mayor Sara Duterte repeatedly punched court sheriff Abe Andres in front ofsome residents and reporters.

The incident took place at a village where the enforcement authorities were to demolish the houses of informal settlers on a 2,000-sq-metre piece of land.

A scuffle broke out when some residents put up resistance, and resulted in a police officer and three villagers being injured.

The violence prompted Duterte to punch court sheriff Abe Andres who was trying to enforce the demolition order on 220 families, andTV crews captured the incident on tape.

Duterte admitted that she was unable to control her temper because the sheriff turned down her request to give her two hours to arrive at the scene to talk to the villagers before enforcing the demolition.

She was still in another town attending to the concerns of some flood victims.

Duterte also scolded the police for failing to control the situation, and added that no violence would have ensued had the sheriff listened to her.

"Look at the demolition team, it seems they are not here to demolish, they are here for a riot."

In an interview with GMA News Davao, Andres said he had no plans of filing a formal complaint against the mayor. To watch the clip, click here.
