Lovelorn maid falls to her death

By Edmund Ngo

An Indonesian maid in Penang, who tied five towels and a bed sheet to climb down from an eighth floor condominium unit in Paya Terubong, George Town to meet her boyfriend, fell to her death when her 'improvised rope' snapped.

According to a text message found in the her phone, the 33-year-old maid had wanted to meet her boyfriend waiting in the condominium lobby at 11.30pm.

However, her employer refused her request.

So, she tied five towels and a bed sheet, tied one end to the window frame and strapped the other end around her body and climbed out the window.

But the 'rope' gave way and she fell to her death at about 2.30am on Sunday.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng, who confirmed the incident, said police had ruled out foul play and that initial investigations showed no sign of abuse on the maids body.

The case is currently classified under sudden death and a post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow for us to know more, he said.

He said police have recorded statements from the maids employers, who were a couple in their 50s.

It is learnt the maids contract was to end in April this year.

ACP Gan said police were looking for the boyfriend, also an Indonesian, to assist in investigations. He has gone missing.
