Oh boy, 15-year-old in trouble with Ah Long

A Malaysian teen, aged 15 is among 409 borrowers of loans from Ah Long (loan sharks) whose cases have been referred to the MCA Public Complaints Bureau this year.
Bureau chief Datuk Micheal Chong said Monday that although cases of young people borrowing from Ah Long were isolated, the problem should be viewed seriously to prevent more from getting trapped in Ah Long loans.
It is understood that the teenager, who is from Kuala Lumpur, had borrowed more than RM10,000 from Ah Longs to indulge in online gambling.

Chong regretted the attitude of some borrowers who went back to borrowing money from Ah Longs even after having settled their loans.
"They are unrepentant although they know the risks involved as the bureau has advised them not to borrow money from Ah Longs because of the exorbitant interest rates and the adverse repercussions if they fail to pay up," he said.
Chong also hit out at Ah Longs who victimised the family members of errant borrowers.
"They must not make the family members easy targets as the latter are not at fault if the borrowers fail to pay up.
"If they want to punish, go find the errant borrowers themselves and not resort to harassing the innocent family members," he further told reporters.
Chong said the bureau had received many complaints from family members who were traced and victimised by Ah Longs when the latter failed to locate the errant borrowers.
He said errant borrowers would usually use all kinds of tricks to escape the Ah Longs who were looking for them, including one or two desperate cases of staging their own abduction to obtain money to pay off the Ah Longs.
"I hope the borrowers know how to handle their own debts and not cause their own family members to be victimised by Ah Longs," he added.
