Zhu Guangbing has threatened to kill a dog every day from June 1 if animal activists do not give the money they use for rescuing dogs to starving students in underdeveloped areasZhu posted his microblog on Weibo.com, Guangzhou Daily reported Friday.

His microblog received overwhelming criticism over the Internet. Netizens launched a cyber-manhunt for him and his personal information has been exposed online.

Zhu was forced to quit his job after he was disturbed repeatedly by netizens during work, the report said.

As the pressure mounted, Zhu backtracked a little, promising to give up his dog-killing project if those who blocked the highway to rescue the dogs are willing to apologise for their improper behaviour and publish how the donated money is used.

A truck loaded with more than 400 stray dogs was stopped by volunteers on its way to northeast Jilin Province to be butchered for meat.Animal rightists halted the truck and paid 115,000 yuan (US$11,716) to buy all the dogs from the driver and dog vendors.

The rescue mission sparked nationwide debate and some people accused the activists of seriously disrupting highway traffic.
